Pain

What is the purpose of pain?

Some say that it is to let you know that something is wrong - something needs attending to.

Does this mean the purpose of my three day migraine is to tell me there's something wrong with my brain? - er duh!

No seriously, why do some people suffer with chronic and debilitating pain, and others breeze through life. Not FAIR!!!!!

Is there a lesson to be learnt here?? WHAT IS IT?? will somebody tell me so i can learn it and lose these d@m$ migraines!

Mind Control

Why is the mind so hard to control? Why do thoughts come unbidden to your mind - unwanted, not true thoughts even, things that you would never consciously think.

I give you an example. My daughter this afternoon said to me

you are called BOSSY mummy

and my mind replied - and you are called pain in the arse daughter. I didn't and never would, say anything like this out loud. I don't even actually think it's true most of the time! I wish i could control my thoughts the way I control my actions. Well, most of my actions. That action that takes food and brings it to the mouth i seem to have trouble with - but you get the point!

Service

Don't you hate it when you don't get what you pay for?

My internet connection has been down for the last few days. We've only had broadband for a month, and I think it's been down more than up. When we called, they first treated us like morons and told us to make sure the modem was plugged in! uh der. Then they blamed the lines rather than the modem. Actually, this one might be true, as anyone from Australia will know, Telstra usually is to blame!

That's about as far as we have gone in our quest for better service. We have yet to ring telstra as, quite frankly, we couldn't be bothered at the moment. You can bet it's going to be a long and painful process, and there is no way we'll get a refund, even though it's affected my work and income.

Admittedly we went for the cheapest plan that suited our needs, but i prefer to think of it as "best value" rather than cheap. And anyway, it's not that cheap!

marriage sermon

I recently heard an idea for a great marriage sermon/talk/thingo

It was only eight words long which is one of the things that attracted me to it as that is about the length of my attention span!

basically, there are eight words you should say to your spouse everyday

i love you (obviously)
I'm sorry (officially this is probably three words but we're counting it as two)
I forgive you.

He also said that if you feel like you don't need to say the last two everyday you should check your pulse!

So, it turns out that my mind is better mannered than i thought, it doesn't actually burp that much! Maybe thats because I'm just too tired to think??

Television

I have a love hate relationship with television.

It takes time away from me that could be used for better things, like building relationships with friends and family, housework (yuck) creative pursuits etc, and it takes time away from my kids that could also be better used. It also portrays things about life that are SO wrong. I really shouldn't watch romantic movies or shows, because it makes me want things that really don't exist in the real world. There are also shows that give me nightmares and anxiety attacks, but for some reason i persist in viewing them.

On the other hand, it makes a great babysitter, it means i can get things done around the house and on the computer. There are also things to learn from certain shows. It also demands nothing from me and can give a welcome break from the grind of reality.

So what is the answer. Everynow and then we ban television from the house. This usually lasts about 5 hours untill the next episonde of greys anatomy or heros. Lets face, our family just doesn't have enough willl power for this one.

Our solution - we kind of limit it, we banned scary shows, tv before school..and well thats about it for now. Does anyone out there ave a better answser?

a weighty issue

I would just like to get a few things straight about the overweight community, myself being a fully paid member. OK, so there are a few MAJOR generalisations, maybe we should just take this as being about me.
  1. Contrary to popular opinion, we are not all stupid! I mean seriously, if another doctor feels the need to point out my weight problem i may just do something nasty. I mean really, I have a mirror! Also on this point, most of us actually do know how to lose weight (well I do anyway) I probably know more about calories, fat content, carbs and nutrition than the average person. There are just factors in my life that make this difficult
  2. I bash myself up, call myself names and generally hate myself enough without ANYONE having to add to the pain. THANKYOU VERY MUCH
  3. There is more to me than the way I look.
  4. I actually have quite a few things going on in my life at the moment. (see my blog called crazy-simmy) Just because my weight is the easiest to see does not mean it is the most urgent. Sometimes if you dig a little deeper you will find more important things than a couple (ok, more than a couple) of kilos
  5. Overweight people are not all lazy. Yes, i avoid excercise like the plague, but I do do other things you know, i don't sit around on my sizeable rear all day! Moving can cause considerable pain for some people. I have chronic, quite severe pain. I mean, my husband goes to bed with a headache! I live with WAY more than that on a daily basis (and no, this pain is NOT caused by my weight, visa versa actually) I can hear you all now - another excuse. Well dammit, its a bloody good one. If exercising meant you would be in bed for the next week on panadiene forte i'd like to see you try!
  6. Swimming is a great alternative - less pain. Swimming involves swimming costumes - not going to happen. I have my pride. People don't need to see that.

ok, i;m done. For now....
